Tracy Murphy Memorial Scholarship

Two $1,000 Scholarships are awarded to
 NHS members each year.
Tracy Murphy was a true Douglas County native and attended all thirteen years of school at Ava Public Schools.  When she entered high school, she became very active in all aspects of school.  She was a  four-year member of the Pom Pom Squad and practiced on a daily basis.  While in high school, Tracy was on the speech team, in Quill & Scroll, Key Club Queen, Anchor Club, the top ten-percent of her class and worked part-time at Wal-Mart.
Tracy was on the original members of the National Honor Society in Ava High School which was very important to her. She felt that athletic students were honored at many events, but scholastic achievements were seldom recognized.  She worked hard with several teachers to help form this club  and was very proud to be a member and officer her junior and senior years.
A few  months into her first-year at Southwest Missouri State University, Tracy was killed in an auto accident.  Her high school teacher, Mrs. Pat Henry, asked Tracy's father Max Murphy, if he would establish a scholarship as a memorial to Tracy to give deserving NHS members a chance to further their education.
The Tracy Murphy Memorial Scholarship was established in 1987. To date, we have given sixty-five scholarships totaling $81,000.  The money for this scholarship has accumulated from donations in lieu of flowers, private contributions and fund raisers by the club members through the years.
Tracy's family believes that a small portion of  her life can live on in the lives of people that benefit from this memorial scholarship.
