Ava High School National Honor Society was chartered in 1985 with the vision and leadership of faculty adviser Mrs. Dorothy Norman.  The first induction was held in November 1985.
The chapter's name was officially changed in 2010 to the Dorothy Norman Chapter of NHS.

Excerpt of speech by Dr. Nancy Lawler at name changing ceremony:
I started to reflect on Mrs. Dorothy Norman.  My first thought of her was how I always thought she had the prettiest hands.

What did her gracious hands represent to me?
Her hands showed her class and style.  Mrs. Norman modeled for us confidence, compassion, and character.  She was the perfect AHS faculty member to sponsor an organization centered on the pillars of National Honor Society:  Scholarship, Leadership, Community Service, and Character.

How did Mrs. Norman “touch with her hands” scholarship?
She was our school librarian.  She had contact with every student in AHS.  When we came to the library to work on class projects, she helped shape our thoughts and research.

She modeled scholarship by learning with us – showing us that she embraced the life-long love of learning. She helped us learn that learning can be a hard process, but knowing you've learned a difficult subject is the reward.

Mrs. Norman “touched with her hands” leadership.  She worked with the local school administration and the national organization to bring NHS to Ava High School

She believed AHS needed a chapter for students that excelled academically as well as socially. Through her leadership, NHS was established at AHS in 1986.

True leaders have a purpose and a vision and true leaders work step by step to bring their vision and purpose into reality.

How  did Mrs. Norman “touch with her hands” community service?
Mrs. Norman led by example with community service.  She did what was right for the students and teachers at AHS. She was the ‘go to’ person for us as students.  I also know through visiting with her colleagues, she was the ‘go to’  person for them!

She did what was right for the community.  She was instrumental in the Douglas County melodramas.  One would think, knowing how much Mrs. Norman cares about Ava, that she was an Ava graduate.
